Version 1.0, published: June 21, 2024. Open Access 14
Description
This data collection comprises a text corpus of social media posts documenting the official Ukrainian discourse about residents of the territories occupied by Russia. The sample is compiled to analyse the Ukrainian official discourse concerning the residents of the occupied territories. Due to the increased relevance of social media as a news source for Ukrainian citizens, the sample consists of written statements from eight selected formal and informal actors who, as part of the Ukrainian executive branch under Zelensky, were prominent in Ukrainian public discourse during the studied timeframe (from February 24, 2022, to December 31, 2023). The sample includes 193 published statements from the official websites and official accounts on Telegram and Facebook (as Word-documents in the sample) of the selected actors: Zelensky (96 statements), Yermak (25 statements), Podolyak (15 statements), Arestovych (16 statements), Shmyhal (7 statements), Vereshchuk (22 statements), Kim (8 statements), and Zaluzhnyi (4 statements). Only their self-authored statements were considered for the sample, excluding any forwarded posts. The sample represents a collection of Word documents grouped by the respective actors. Each contribution was saved as an individual Word document, including the name of the respective actor and the publication date.
The selection of content-relevant statements was made using the following search terms in Ukrainian, Russian, and English: “occupied territories,” “occupation,” “People's Republic,” “Donetsk,” “Luhansk,” “Donbas,” “DNR,” “LNR,” “Crimea,” “annexation,” “annexed,” “integration,” “reintegration,” “ORDLO,” “Russian passports,” “passportization,” “collaboration,” and “collaborator.” After intensive reading of all selected contributions, the sample was further refined so that only texts mentioning territories occupied by Russia remained.
